123rd Annual Halstead Old Settlers Celebration
August 13-15, 2010

History has recorded many great events since 1887 – the first automobile, air travel, space exploration. Yet one thing has remained the same. For the past 123 years, an annual event has been held in Halstead celebrating the spirit and the people of our community. Old Settlers is the longest continuous celebration in Harvey County. And it returns again this year in just a few short weeks!

Halstead Wins 3rd Place in State Golf - Wingert Places 4th In State!

Golf team wins 3rd place at state!

Confidence Brings Home 4th Place in State Play - Wichita Tall Grass Golf Course. We went in under the radar, exclaimed Coach Warsnak, confident that we could bring something home and they did, 3rd Place Team with Elliott Wingert bring home 4th for individual play. What a great way to end your high school year!, I am so very excited for Elliott, said Warsnak. He had his personal best with a 77. We were very careful not to overextend ourselves, we started slow the first 9 holes - in 5th place. The second 9, the team provided a lot of fantastic scoring under pressure, they were ready for the job and performed well. We had a very good season, except for one tournament, we finished in the top three every match. Our league is tough and it prepared us well, we were not intimidated by much, said Coach Warsnak.

Ready For The Mowing Season

Halstead - Saturday Night Halstead Juniors and Seniors held their yearly prom. Blake Carpenter was determined to make this night special by arriving in his chariot of choice, the family lawn mower!

"The reason why I rode a lawn mower to prom was because no one else from what I heard was doing it, so I decided to go outside of the box. I also felt like it would be really funny so I decided to go for it and I was laughing when I pulled up and people were surprised that I actually went through with riding a lawn mower to prom. (My escorts were Levi and Anthony - the car in front and behind the mower)." said Mr. Carpenter.

When Blake arrived I asked him about his date. I did not have a date for prom my date cancelled on me. said Blake. She may have heard about the planed mode of transportation.

Junior and Senior fathers were providing valet parking that evening as students arrived. Mr. Alan Andre' Thibault found himself inline next to park Blake's cruiser. Blake replied that, Mr. Thibault, saw me pull up, he gave me the look like "dang it I have to go park that!" So I hopped off the mower and he sat down and I gave him the quick run through of how to drive it. I think he made it to the parking stall with out killing the engine.

I asked Blake about his preparations for making the drive on a mower. My family and I had watched the weather before we went up to the school and we knew that it was going to rain so my dad drove a truck up to the school. My dad drove the mower home so I could drive the truck home that night (morning). My father did not get underway soon enough, he ended up driving the mower home in the rain, Blake stated.

The evening proved to be a memorable one for prom. "The prom was a blast! My friends and I all had a fun time. We were all laughing most of the time and enjoying ourselves. This is how I will remember them all, in future years to come because whenever all of the guys get together it is a gaurantee for a fun time. What I liked most about prom is how it was well organized and just the fun that everyone had.

I asked Blake about his attire, as it was very sharp. "The suit was a zuit suit and most of my friends were wearing zuit suits. The suits looked pretty good because all of us looked like we were a part of the Mafia. My suit was black with white pin strips and I had a hat that had a white band around it. I rented my suit at a place called Para fe nella in Wichita."

As for the entertainment Blake replied, the he understood the band played the same songs as last year. "I didn't go last year so I thought the songs were really good. They played the type of music that I like to listen to."

Great fun was had by all that attended The 2009 Masquerade Prom at Halstead High School and that's the way it was.
